Symptoms

The following event is recorded almost every 6 hours in Application log

Log Name: Application
Source: Windows Server Update Services
Event ID: 13042
Description: Self-update is not working.

Cause

This issue can occur if the Default Web Site is not running and/or has a site binding for SSL (HTTPS). This issue can also occur if the Selfupdate virtual directory has the "Require SSL" checked under the SSL settings.

Resolution

1.) Open IIS Manager
2.) Make sure the Selfupdate virtual directory has Anonymous authentication enabled and "Require SSL" is unchecked.
3.) Make sure the Default Web site has Anonymous authentication enabled and "Require SSL" is unchecked.
4.) Remove the SSL (HTTPS) site binding for the Default Web Site.
5.) Stop and start the Default Web site.

More Information

Sometimes you may notice that though there is no SSL site binding for the Default Web site, the SSL settings for the Selfupdate virtual directory show that the "Require SSL" box is checked but grey out. In such case, you need to first add a SSL site binding for the Default Web Site, uncheck the "Require SSL" box for Selfupdate, and then remove the SSL site binding.
