Symptoms

When you install or reinstall a Microsoft Office product, you are prompted to enter the product key. The product key is used during software installation to "unlock" the product. This article describes how to locate your existing product key or how to obtain a replacement product key if the product key is obscured or lost.

Retail software (DVD only). The 25 digit product key is on an orange sticker affixed to the installation DVD cover or case. 
Purchased from http://www.microsoft.com/mac web siteYour product key should be available in your email Inbox from the company called Digital River. Search in your Inbox for email from the following addresses: @BUY.OFFICEFORMAC.COM @TRY.OFFICEFORMAC.COM, or @DIGITALRIVER.COM. If you cannot find existing Product Key or simply need a new one, contact Microsoft Online ESD Support to obtain a replacement product key. You will have to give to the agent the order number or the email address that you used when you purchased the product. This information is available in the email receipt from Digital River. U.S. and Canadian customers:

Phone: (877) 250-1548. (Press option 4 to get transferred to the department that handles product key issues). Alternatively, complete and submit the online form.

Purchased from Microsoft store (http://store.microsoft.com)Your product key was sent to you in email. The email should come from @microsoftstore.com. If you cannot find email from Microsoft store, the product key is listed in the Product Keys page of your Microsoft Store Account. You can also find them on your Purchase History page. You must sign in using your Microsoft Store account on the web site and then click on the purchase history to see the Product Key.

Click Product Keys in your Account (http://microsoftstore.com/account)  page to see the product keys for your downloadable software. In addition to viewing your product keys, you have the option to review your order details and download software from this page.

Volume LicenseYou can obtain the product key from the Microsoft Volume Licensing Service Center (VLSC) Web site.

More information about Home User Program:

The Home Use Program is a Software Assurance benefit available to Microsoft volume licensing customers with active Software Assurance coverage on their Office applications.  Employees who use the covered licenses at work are eligible to purchase these Office applications for use on a home PC during the term of their employment.  This temporary license expires with the employers Software Assurance coverage, or upon termination of employment with the covered customer.


How to replace a lost product key

You can obtain a new product key by contacting North America Customer Service (NACS) at (800) 936-5700. A new key can be generated only if you have retail copy of the software (DVD) or downloaded version through Digital River or Microsoft Store. 

Note There may be a charge to obtain a new product key from Microsoft ACS. When you contact ACS for a new product key, make sure that you have the following items available:
  • The product CD or DVD, if the product came on disc
  • The computer on which you want to install the product
  • The readable parts of your original product key, if this information is available
  • The "inner circle" number on the product disc, as shown in the following graphic
