SYMPTOMS

  • You have a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2. The computer supports the Intelligent Platform Management Interface (IPMI) standard.
  • You use the Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) interface to query the hardware status on the computer.
In this scenario, a Wmiprvse.exe process may crash. Additionally, an event ID 1000 is added to the Application event log. The description of the event resembles the following:

Faulting application name: wmiprvse.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bc39a
Faulting module name: ipmiprv.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5bda1f
Exception code: 0xc0000005 Fault offset: 0x0001c13e
Faulting process id: 0x398
Faulting application start time: 0x01cae22dfd51be89
Faulting application path: C:\Windows\sysWOW64\wbem\wmiprvse.exe
Faulting module path: C:\Windows\system32\wbem\ipmiprv.dll

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Ipmiprv.dll module leads the Wmiprvse.exe process to crash. This behavior depends on certain hardware sensor types when the sensor is enumerated.
