SYMPTOMS

In the GUI-mode portion of Setup, when you are prompted for the computer name, you are allowed to enter nonstandard characters (for example, "qw#$%^_fg"). If you do so, you receive a warning about using a non-DNS name, but you are allowed to continue. After Setup is finished, the Setuperr.log file reports that the computer name has nonstandard characters.

CAUSE

The name has nonstandard characters, but is still valid.

RESOLUTION

Change the computer name to a name that uses standard characters. The following characters are usually invalid for use in a computer name:
/\[]":;|<>+=,?* _

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
