SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Exchange Service Host service (Microsoft.Exchange.ServiceHost.exe) on a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 server crashes intermittently. Additionally, the following event is logged in the Application log:

Event ID: 4999
Task Category: General
Level: Error
Description:
Watson report about to be sent for process id: <process ID>, with parameters: E12, <build type>, <application version>, M.Exchange.ServiceHost, M.Exchange.Diagnostics, M.E.D.ExEventLog.LogEvent, System.ArgumentException, <callstackHash>, <assembly version>.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the EventLog.WriteEvent method throws an ArgumentException exception when an event text is larger than 32,766 characters.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:
2529939  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2529939/ ) Description of Update Rollup 3 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 1

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
