Fable III is a graphically demanding game designed for next generation hardware. Your computer should have both a powerful CPU (processor), and graphics chipset (video card). The video card should also be using the latest video card drivers for the greatest level of performance and compatibility between Fable III and your computer hardware. See the Video Card Drivers section on how to update your video card drivers.

The game can be run in 3D mode but you must meet the 3D Vision System Requirements (http://www.nvidia.com/object/3d-vision-requirements) .

Note: Fable III does not support Microsoft® Windows® 95/98/NT/2000, Beta/Release Candidate versions of Windows 7, or 64-bit versions of Windows XP operating system.

You must have administrative credentials to install the game on Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. However, you do not require administrative credentials to play the game after it is installed. 

To determine whether your computer meets the minimum system requirements to play Fable III, you can use the DirectX 9.0 Diagnostic Tool (Dxdiag.exe). To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type dxdiag.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. Click the System tab. Note the Processor and Memory values.
  3. Click the Display (or Display 1) tab. Then, under Device, note the name of the video card and the Approx. Total Memory value.
  4. Click Exit.
Compare the values on your computer to the system requirements in this section. If your computer does not meet the minimum system requirements, contact your manufacturer for more information about how to obtain the necessary upgrades.

Note: If the game does not meet the minimum requirements, it will not display a warning message.


Video options and effects are not available


To enable Fable III to play on as many hardware configurations as possible, some display resolutions may not be available with older graphics chipsets or hardware with reduced specifications. Also, post-processing performed on more powerful hardware may not be applied. In particular, on the GeForce 7000 series, shadows and some other graphical effects are not available.

Black Screen or problems with video


If the game goes to a black screen, start the Fable III Graphics Option located in the Game Explorer window. The game checks that its current resolution is supported on startup. If it is not supported, the closest supported resolution is selected instead. Sometimes an incorrect resolution may be reported causing the screen to turn black. This is frequently true when TVs are selected as they only support a limited range of resolutions. If this occurs, quit the game (ALT+F4 or Control+Alt+Del), and then run the external graphics settings program to change to a resolution that does work. To run this program, follow these steps: 
  1. Click Start, click All Programs, click Games, and then click Games Explorer.
  2. Right-click Fable III and then select Configure Video Options.

In this Graphics Options window, you can adjust your graphics options. For example, select a lower Screen Resolution, click OK, and then start the game. If the problem continues to occur, start the Graphics Option window again, and then click Re-detect Settings. The game will determine the best settings for your computer. If the problem continues to occur, click Minimum Graphics Detail to determine whether your computer will be able to run the game.  

If you have two video cards installed on the computer, the game may select the default video card in the Display Adapter section. Select the video card in this section that you want to use with the game. 

If the problem continues to occur and your computer meets the game requirements, try updating your video card drivers. Go to the Update Video Card Drivers section in this article.

Update Video Card Drivers

If you experience one of these graphics issues, download and install the latest drivers for your video card:
  • A black or blank screen is displayed when you start Fable III
  • Fable III stops responding (hangs)
  • Fable III quits unexpectedly
  • Slow performance in Fable III

Driver: ForceWare Graphics Driver Version 270.22 WHQL or newer

Note: Testing is performed with the latest official driver sets available at the time. Therefore, if you experience poor performance or graphical anomalies video card drivers should be the first thing to check.

To identify the name and the manufacturer of the video card, follow these steps on a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Vista:

  1. Click Start, type dxdiag.exe in the Start Search box, and then click dxdiag.exe in the Programs list.
  2. Click the Display tab.
  3. Under Device, look for Name and Manufacturer.
  4. Click Exit.
