If you try to "slipstream" a Windows 2000 service pack into a CD-ROM-based image on a Remote Installation Service (RIS) server by using the update -s:path_to_image
command, you may receive the following error message:
An error has occurred copying files from the Service Pack share to
the distribution folder.
After you slip stream a service pack to the base image (by using the update -s:<path_to_image>
command to create a new RIPREP image of a service pack client), new RIS clients who try to download the new Riprep image may have their system stop responding at the Setup is starting Windows 2000
The slipstream switch for Update.exe does not currently support slipstreaming to a CD-ROM-based RIS image.
To resolve this problem, use Risetup.exe to create a CD-ROM-based RIS image that has a slipstreamed service pack. To do so, follow these steps:
- Copy the contents of the Windows 2000 Professional CD-ROM to a shared folder on a server (or a local folder on the RIS server that is not managed by Single Instance Storage [SIS]).
- In the Windows 2000 service pack source files, run the update -s:folder command to slipstream the source files with the service pack.
Note You must first download and extract the service pack before you will be able to run the update -s:folder command.
- When the slipstreaming process is complete, run Risetup.exe on the RIS server to add a new image to the server. If you are prompted for the location of the files, type the path to the slipstream share you created in steps 1 and 2.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
If your RIS server has a base image before you apply the service pack and you try to create an image of a system that has a service pack installed, you may receive the following error message:
The server to which you chose to replicate does not contain a CD-ROM-based image. The version of the CD-ROM-based image on the server must match the version of the system you are attempting to copy. Select a different server or add a CD-ROM-based image to this server.
To work around this error message, follow the steps in the "Resolution" section of this article to create a slipstreamed base image on the server.
