SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You perform Multi-Mailbox Search in a Microsoft Exchange Server 2010 environment.
  • You specify multiple users in the Message To or From Specific E-Mail Addresses option.
In this scenario, Multi-Mailbox Search fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

An error occurred when searching Mailbox. The message is 'Search Failed on mailbox 'Domain\Mailbox\ID'. If the search query used short words with wildcard(s) such as pat*, it can result in a large number of words or phrases because all permutations of words starting with “pat” are searched. Make search queries as specific as possible when using wildcards. '.

Additionally, following event is logged in Application log on the Exchange Server 2010 server:

Log Name: Application
Source: MSExchange Mid-Tier Storage
Date: Date
Event ID: 3003
Task Category: Discovery
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: Computer
Description:
An error occurred when searching Mailbox. The message is 'Search Failed on mailbox 'Domain\Mailbox\ID'. If the search query used short words with wildcard(s) such as pat*, it can result in a large number of words or phrases because all permutations of words starting with “pat” are searched. Make search queries as specific as possible when using wildcards. '.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the discovery search query fails in the Microsoft Search service search engine when the discovery search query is larger than 64 kb.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, install the following update rollup:
2645995  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2645995/ ) Description of Update Rollup 1 for Exchange Server 2010 Service Pack 2
After you install this update rollup, the 64-kb limit is not changed or increased. When the Multi-Mailbox Search query reaches the 64-kb limit, you will receive the following error message:
Log Name: Application
Source: MSExchange Mid-Tier Storage
Date: Date
Event ID: 3003
Task Category: Discovery
Level: Error
Keywords: Classic
User: N/A
Computer: Computer
Description:
An error occurred when searching Mailbox. The message is 'Cannot set search criteria in SearchFolder. Try using fewer keywords at the same time, reducing the number of users in the From, To, Cc and Bcc fields, and reducing the number of mailboxes that are searched at the same time.'.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
