SUMMARY

Windows Server "8" Beta introduces new file share properties to support new functionality. These new property settings are only available in tools that ship with Windows Server "8" Beta and have been designed to support the new properties such as Server Manager, PowerShell commands, and Failover Cluster Manager.

New properties that must be configured using the new tools are:
  • Encrypt Data Access
  • Continuous Availability

Tools such as "Share and Storage" and "Shared Folders" MMC snap-ins, the "Share..." and "Share with" context menu wizards from Windows Explorer, the "Sharing" property sheet in the Windows Explorer, and tools that use NetAPI, such as the NET.EXE command line tool, do not support setting these new properties on SMB shares.

MORE INFORMATION

Please note that the Continuous Availability property is available only for clustered file shares, which requires the Windows Server "8" Beta Failover Clustering feature with the File Server cluster role configured.

The default setting for Continuous Availability on new file shares will differ depending on what tool is used to create the file share.

When using tools that support setting Continuous Availability property, such as the New-SmbShare PowerShell cmdlet, New File Share wizard in Server Manager and Failover Clustering Manager, the default setting is:
Continuous Availability = On

When using tools that do not support the Continuous Availability property the setting is:
Continuous Availability = Off

This behavior can be modified such that file shares created with tools that do not support setting the Continuous Availability property will have the property: Continuous Availability = On
