SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You install the Remote Desktop Session Host role service on a computer that is running Windows Server 2008 R2.
  • You use the RemoteApp Manager to add a program to the RemoteApp Programs list.
  • You run the RemoteApp Wizard to create a Remote Desktop Protocol (.rdp) file for the RemoteApp program.
  • You try to start the RemoteApp program by double-clicking a file whose file type is associated with the RemoteApp program.
In this scenario, the RemoteApp program does not start. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
RemoteApp Error:
The program Program Name was not found.
For assistance, contact your system administrator.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because both the remote document path and the .rdp file path are sent to Mstsc.exe when you try to open the file. In this situation, a Remote Applications Integrated Locally (RAIL) request is sent to the server. Therefore, a race condition occurs when RAIL processes a shell execution before the rdpdr component receives notification.
