Summary

September 30th 2012 will be the last day Forefront Server and Antigen products will receive updates for the Virus Buster engine. The engine is being retired.

In order to avoid any technical issues resulting from continued use of the retired engine, users can disable the engine from both scanning and updating. Continuing to utilize the Virus Buster engine will result in decreased detection capability over time.

The following event warning will now be logged to the Application Log providing an additional reminder:

The VBuster scan engine has been marked as deprecated. Updates for this engine will only be available until 9/30/12.

Please see the following guidance on effectively disabling the Virus Buster scan engine:

Antigen for Exchange and SharePoint:

Disable Updates: To disable engine updates, go to Settings and then Scanner Updates. Highlight the Virus Buster engine and hit Disable. Save.

Disable Scan: To disable Virus Buster scanning, go to Settings and then Antivirus. Highlight each scan job one at a time and uncheck Virus Buster Antivirus Scan Engine under File Scanners. Save each time you uncheck the engine for each scan job. You will also have to go to Operate and then Quick Scan and uncheck the Virus Buster Antivirus Scan Engine under File Scanners.



Forefront Server Security for Exchange and SharePoint:

Disable Updates: To disable engine updates, go to Settings and then Scanner Updates. Highlight the Virus Buster engine and hit Disable. Save.

Disable Scan: To disable Virus Buster scanning, go to Settings and then Antivirus. Uncheck Virus Buster Antivirus Scan Engine under File Scanners. You will also have to go to Operate and then Quick Scan and uncheck the Virus Buster Antivirus Scan Engine under File Scanners.




Forefront Protection for Exchange and SharePoint:


Disable Updates: To disable engine updates, go to Policy Management/Global Settings. Click Advanced Options under Global Settings. Under Update scheduling highlight VirusBuster Antivirus Scan Engine. Click Edit Selected Engines. Uncheck the Enabled box. Click Apply and Close. When this pane closes, you must now hit Save on top of the Advanced Options panel.

Disable Scan: To disable Virus Buster scanning, go to Policy Management/Global Settings. Click Advanced Options under Global Settings. Under Engine selection set each scan job to Disabled for Virus Buster Antivirus Scan Engine. Hit Save on top of the Advanced Options panel.



Forefront Security for Office Communications Server and LYNC:


Disable Updates: To disable engine updates, go to Settings/Scanner Updates.  Highlight the Virus Buster engine and hit Disable. Save.

Disable Scan: To disable Virus Buster scanning, go to Settings and then Antivirus. Uncheck Virus Buster Antivirus Scan Engine under File Scanners.



Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC)

If you are using Forefront Protection Server Management Console (FPSMC) to manage or distribute engine updates, please edit your signature redistribution job appropriately to eliminate the Virus Buster engine from being applied to Forefront. Forefront Server Security Management Console (FSSMC)

If you are using Forefront Server Security Management Console (FSSMC) to manage or distribute engine updates, please edit your signature redistribution job appropriately to eliminate the Virus Buster engine from being applied to Forefront.
