To help make sure that your computers run smoothly and to keep your data as safe as possible, you have to keep Windows, other programs, and hardware drivers that are running on your computers up to date. It is easy to update Microsoft software and drivers using Windows Update.

A driver is software that allows your computer to communicate with hardware or devices. Without updated drivers, the hardware you connect (for example, sound or video, printers and scanners) will not work properly.

In most cases, driver software comes with Windows or can be found by going to Windows Update in and checking for updates. If Windows doesn't have the driver you need, you can find it on the disc that came with the hardware or device you want to use, or on the manufacturer's website.

This interactive guided walk-through will help you keep your software and drivers up to date.
