The Microsoft SQL Server 2008 SP3 fixes are released as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 SP3 fix release.

Symptoms

When you search for phrases or use the Near operator in a full-text search in Microsoft SQL Server 2008 or Microsoft SQL Server 2008 R2, you notice that not all the results are returned.

Cause

This issue occurs because the location information for words is occasionally written into an index out of order during the regular merge process of a population. This location information is used to perform proximity searches for phrases or for using the Near operator. When one or more words in a phrase or in the Near operator contains the out-of-order location information, incorrect results are returned.

Resolution

To resolve this issue, apply the appropriate cumulative update package.

After you apply this update, it is necessary to rebuild all full-text indexes in each database to reorganize the location information in the correct order.  After applying the cumulative update package and rebuilding the full-text indexes, the location information for each word is ordered correctly during the regular merge process of a population.
