SYMPTOMS

When you try to open a file or document that resides on a Distributed File System (DFS) share, it may take a long amount of time to open the resource (from 90 seconds to 15 minutes). However, you may be able to quickly open the same resource by using a UNC path.

CAUSE

The problem is caused when the WebClient redirector does not cache information.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Windows XP. For additional information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows XP Service Pack 1.

MORE INFORMATION

You can disable the Webclient service to verify if you are experiencing this problem. If the problem is resolved when you do so, it is likely that the hotfix that is described in this article will correct the problem.
