SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to upgrade to Windows XP, the upgrade report may state that Adaptec GoBack (System Restoration Utility) software is incompatible with Windows XP and should be uninstalled. As a result, Setup cannot continue. This issue occurs even if you have uninstalled the Adaptec GoBack software.

CAUSE

This issue can occur because some of the Adaptec GoBack software files may remain on the hard drive or in the registry after you uninstall GoBack.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, uninstall all Adaptec software and delete all of the related files. To do this, follow these steps.

Remove Adaptec Programs

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  3. In the list of installed programs, click any Adaptec program, and then click Remove.

    Follow prompts to complete the uninstallation process.
  4. Repeat step 3 for each Adaptec program.
  5. Start Windows Explorer, and then browse to C:\WINDOWS\TEMP.
  6. On the Edit menu, click Select All, and then press DELETE.

    When you receive the confirmation message, click Yes.
  7. Browse to C:\WINDOWS, right-click GBsetup.exe, and then click Delete.

    When you receive the confirmation message, click Yes.
  8. Repeat step 7 to delete GBSethlp.exe.

Remove Adaptec Registry Keys

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, and then click Run. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. In Registry Editor, click My Computer to highlight it, and then click Find on the Edit menu.
  3. In the Find dialog box, type GoBack in the Find what box, and then click Find Next.
  4. Delete all registry keys that are associated with GoBack. Press F3 to continue to search or click Find Next. Repeat this step until the entire registry has been searched.

    You may find entries that you cannot delete.
  5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for GBMenu, GBFile, GBDrive, and GBRevert. Delete all entries that are associated with GoBack.
  6. Quit Registry Editor. Make sure that you have the Folder Options in Microsoft Windows set to show all hidden files.
  7. Click Start, and then click Search. Search for the following words: GoBack, Vbox, and Roxio.
  8. Delete all registry entries that are associated with GoBack.

    You may find some GoBack components in the root drive\Windows\System32\Drivers folder. If you find anything that starts with GB or GoBack in this folder, delete it.
  9. Look for a folder called Roxio in the Program Files folder. Delete the Roxio folder.
You should now be able to run the Upgrade Advisor and Windows XP Setup successfully.
