SUMMARY

This step-by-step article explains the differences between the Retail and Enterprise editions of Microsoft Project 2002, and describes how you can determine which edition is installed on your computer.

How to Determine Whether You Have a Retail or Enterprise Edition of Microsoft Project

Although both the Retail and the Enterprise editions of Microsoft Project are almost the same, there may be situations in which you have to determine the edition that is installed on your computer. Use one or more of the following criteria to determine your edition of Microsoft Project:
Microsoft Project SKU
Name of the .Msi file on the Microsoft Project CD-ROM
Activation requirement
Installation source

View Microsoft Project SKU

There are multiple Microsoft Project stock-keeping units (SKUs) that are available for Microsoft Project 2002. The following table lists the Microsoft Project SKUs that are available for Retail and Enterprise editions.
   Microsoft Project SKU Editions available
   -----------------------------------------------------

   Server Enterprise and Retail
   Professional Enterprise and Retail
   Standard Enterprise and Retail

Because SKUs may overlap between Enterprise and Retail editions, use one of the other methods that are listed in this article to determine which edition of Microsoft Project is installed on your computer.

View Name of .msi File on the Microsoft Project CD-ROM

The name of the Windows Installer .msi package file that is located on the Microsoft Project CD-ROM varies, depending on the edition of Microsoft Project. The .msi file is located on the root of the Microsoft Project Standard and Microsoft Project Professional CD-ROMs, and in the Prjsvr folder of the Microsoft Project Server CD-ROM. The following table lists the different .msi file names and the editions that they represent.
Microsoft Project Edition Market .Msi File Name
   ----------------------------------------------------------

   Server Retail Prjsvr.msi
   Server Enterprise Prjsvre.msi
   Standard Retail Prjstd.msi
   Standard Enterprise Prjstde.msi
   Professional Retail Prjpro.msi
   Professional Enterprise Prjproe.msi

If you do not have access to your Microsoft Project CD-ROM, use one of the the other methods listed in this article.

Consider Activation Requirement

If you have to activate your Microsoft Project license, you own a Retail edition of Microsoft Project. Enterprise editions of Microsoft Project are obtained through multiple-license agreements and do not require product activation.

Consider Installation Source

You can determine whether you have an Enterprise or Retail edition of Microsoft Project from the source of your Microsoft Project installation. If you install Microsoft Project from either of the following two sources, you have an Enterprise edition of Microsoft Project:
  • Network administrative installation
  • Web address by means of a browser
These installation sources can only be created by using an Enterprise edition of Microsoft Project.

If you install Microsoft Project from a Microsoft Project CD-ROM, use one of the methods listed earlier in this article to determine whether you have a Retail or Enterprise edition of Microsoft Project.
