SYMPTOMS

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003, the Web service extension to allow or prohibit Indexing Service functionality is missing from the list of Web service extensions in Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager, although Indexing Service is installed on the server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if Indexing Service is installed before IIS is installed on the server. IIS must be installed on the server before Indexing Service is installed so that the Indexing Service Web service extension is registered with IIS. If IIS is not installed, Indexing Service cannot register its Web service extension. By default, the IIS installer does not add the Web service extension when IIS is installed.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, remove and re-add Indexing Service to the server. To remove Indexing Service, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Click Add or Remove Programs, and then click Add/Remove Windows Components to open the Windows Components wizard.
  3. In the Components list, click to clear the Indexing Service check box, and then click Next.
  4. When the wizard completes, click Finish.
After the wizard completes, Indexing Service has been removed. To add it, follow these steps:
  1. Click Add/Remove Windows Components to open the Windows Components wizard.
  2. In the Components list, click to select the Indexing Service check box, and then click Next.
  3. When the wizard completes, click Finish.
The Web service extension has now been added to IIS. By default, the Web service extension is set to Prohibited.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
