To work around this issue, disable the speech recognition component. To do this, click Start, click Run, type regsvr32 /u msctf.dll, and then click OK.

Note  After you disable this component, you cannot use the Microsoft Office XP speech tools.

This issue occurs when you start Windows Update in Windows Help and Support on a computer that has Office XP installed. This issue is caused by the speech recognition component in Office XP.

What is the speech recognition component in Office XP

The speech recognition component enables Windows to recognize spoken words and convert them to text.

How to tell if the speech recognition component is installed

To check whether the speech recognition component is installed, double-click Speech in Control Panel. If there is a Speech Recognition tab in the Speech Properties window, the speech recognition component is installed on your computer.
