After you have been granted the Reset
User Passwords and Force Password Change at Next Logon
permission, and you log on
to a Microsoft Windows Server 2003 domain controller or a Microsoft Windows
XP-based computer that has the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools Pack
installed, the following symptoms may occur:
- In Active Directory Users and Computers, when you right-click a
user name, and then click Reset Password, the User
must change password at next logon check box is
- In Active Directory Users and Computers, when you open Properties for
a user, the User must change password at next logon check box
is available on the Account tab.
This problem may occur if you are granted the Reset User Passwords and Force Password Change at Next Logon
permission at the Active Directory organizational unit level, and then you try to use
the Reset Password
command. This problem occurs because Administrative Tools incorrectly evaluates user permissions.

There is no requirement if you install this hotfix on Windows Server 2003. If you install this hotfix on Windows XP, Windows XP
Service Pack 1 is required.
You must restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.
Hotfix replacement information
This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.
The English version of this hotfix has the file
attributes (or later) that are listed in the following table. The dates and
times for these files are listed in coordinated universal time (UTC). When you
view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the
difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone
in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
- Start Active Directory Users and Computers.
- Right-click the name of the user whose password you want to change, and then click Properties.
- Click the Account tab, and then, in the
Account Options area, click to select the User must
change password at next logon check box.
- Click Apply, and then click
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2.
