SYMPTOMS

When you view the E-mail Addresses tab in the username Properties dialog box of a user in the Active Directory Users and Computers tool, you notice that many Lotus Notes proxy addresses appear in the E-mail addresses list. Additionally, the number of Lotus Notes proxy addresses increases for this user account every time that the Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Recipient Update Service runs.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if both of the following conditions are true:
  • The user account does not have a first name or a last name specified in the username Properties dialog box in the Active Directory Users and Computers tool.
  • The Lotus Notes Address proxy e-mail address specifies the first name and last name variables. For example, you use a Lotus Notes proxy address that is similar to the following:
    &g&s/First Administrative Group/corp@contoso.com
    Note The g variable stands for "given name" (first name), and the s variable stands for "surname" (last name).
This problem occurs because when the Recipient Update Service runs in the domain, it examines the current proxy addresses to determine if they have been modified. In the scenario where you stamp a proxy address that specifies the last name and the first name but the user account does not have a last name or a first name, the Recipient Update Service determines that this proxy address has been modified. Therefore, it creates an additional Lotus Notes proxy address every time that it runs.

RESOLUTION

Service pack information

To resolve this problem, obtain the latest service pack for Exchange Server 2003. For more information, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Hotfix information

Prerequisites

No prerequisites are required to install this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart your computer after you install this hotfix. However, all the following services are automatically stopped and then restarted when you install this hotfix:
  • MSExchangeMTA
  • MSExchangeIS
  • MSExchangeSA

Hotfix replacement information

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

File information

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, manually remove the extra Lotus Notes proxy addresses.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section. This problem was first corrected in Exchange Server 2003 Service Pack 2.
