If you try to use the Group Policy Object Editor to configure security policy settings for event logs on a remote Microsoft Windows Server 2003 domain controller, this operation may not work as expected. Specifically, when you double-click the security policy setting for the event log in the Group Policy Object Editor, and then you click to select the Define this policy setting
check box, you receive the following error message:

These symptoms occur when you try to configure security policy settings from a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer.
This problem may occur in the following scenario:
- You install the Windows Server 2003 Administration Tools on your Windows XP-based computer.
- You edit the Sceregvl.inf file by following the instructions that are described in steps 1 through 4 of the "Use Group Policy to set your application and system log security for a domain, site, or organizational unit in Active Directory" section of the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

- You start the Active Directory Users and Computers snap-in, and then you open the Group Policy object that you want to configure.
In this situation, Windows XP uses an incorrect registry type to process the operation.
