When you upgrade your computer to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) or to Microsoft Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005, when you restart your computer during the installation, the computer stops unexpectedly and you receive the following error message:
A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer...
Technical information:
*** STOP: 0x00000050 (0x905108010, 0x00000000, 0x80509443, 0x00000000)
Note The four parameters in this error message may vary, depending on the cause of the Stop error.

Note The Windows XP SP2 features and components are included in Windows XP Tablet PC Edition 2005.

This problem may occur if you use the BootSkin program from Stardock Corporation. The BootSkin program changes the appearance of the Microsoft Windows XP startup screen by using a startup screen driver. This driver may not load correctly during the installation of Windows XP SP2 when the computer first restarts. If you turn off the BootSkin program before you install Windows XP SP2, you can turn the program back on after you install Windows XP SP2.

To resolve this problem, turn off BootSkin before you install Windows XP Service Pack 2. For more information about how to turn off BootSkin, visit the following Stardock support Web site: (
