SYMPTOMS

After you enable the Prevent access to drives from My Computer Group Policy setting on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you can still access the CD-R and CD-RW drives.

Note The Prevent access to drives from My Computer setting is located in the following folder in the Group Policy MMC snap-in:
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Explorer

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must install Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) before you install this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time tool in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type mmc, and then click OK.
  2. On the File menu, click Add/Remove Snap-in.
  3. Click Add.
  4. Under Available Stand-alone Snap-ins, click Group Policy, and then click Add.

    Note Click Browse to locate Group Policy objects (GPOs) that are linked to sites, domains, organizational units, or computers. The default Group Policy object is Local Computer. Use this object to change the settings on the local computer, or click Browse to locate GPOs on other computers.
  5. Click Finish, click Close, and then click OK to close the Add/Remove Snap-in dialog box
  6. Expand User configuration.
  7. Under User Configuration, expand Administrative Templates, and then expand Windows Components.
  8. Under Windows Components, click Windows Explorer.
  9. Locate and then double-click Remove CD Burning features.
  10. Click the Setting tab, click Enabled, click Apply, and then click OK.
  11. Close the Group Policy snap-in.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
