SYMPTOMS

After you install Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2), your computer may unexpectedly stop, and you may receive the following error:
stop:0x00000082 (0xF85316FC, 0xf852951c, 0x000000000,0x00000000)
mup.sys - address f85316FC base at F85230000, datestamp 40f09d2e
mup.sys - address f852951C base at F85230000, datestamp 40f09d2e
Additionally, this symptom may occur after you install security update 890859 (MS05-018)in Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

Windows XP

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

If the hotfix is available for download, there is a "Hotfix download available" section at the top of this Knowledge Base article. If this section does not appear, contact Microsoft Customer Service and Support to obtain the hotfix.
