Consider the following scenario: You change the batteries on a portable computer that is in hibernation or in a suspended state, and then you resume the computer. In this scenario, one or more of the following symptoms may occur:
- The information that is displayed on the Power Meter tab may be incorrect.
Specifically, information in the following categories on the Power Meter tab may be incorrect:
- Total battery power remaining
- The computer remains in low battery hibernation mode, even though the battery may be fully charged. The computer may then shut down because the operating system mistakenly interprets the battery power to be very low.
This problem may occur when the battery information is not correctly updated after you replace the batteries.
For example, this problem may occur in the following scenario:
- You put your computer into hibernation or into a suspended state.
- You replace the battery with a battery of a different capacity. For example, you use one of the following procedures:
- You change the battery from a larger capacity battery to a smaller capacity battery.
- You change the battery from a smaller capacity battery to a larger capacity battery.
A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

The "Hotfix download available" form displays the languages for which the hotfix is available. If you do not see your language, it is because a hotfix is not available for that language.
The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone
tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

To work around this problem, restart the computer.

To locate the Power Meter
tab, follow these steps:
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
- Click Performance and Maintenance.
- Click Power Options.
