SUMMARY

This article lists the codecs that are included with Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) and that are available for use by Microsoft Windows Media Player. The codecs for Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series are integrated with Windows XP SP2. The installation of Microsoft Windows Media Player 10 or Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime will automatically update the codecs that are used by the version of Windows Media Player that is on the computer.

Also included in this article is a list of codecs that are installed or are updated by Microsoft Windows Media Components.

Note Codecs that are only available through advanced Windows APIs such as DirectPlay and TAPI are not listed in this article.

Windows Media Audio ProfessionalMicrosoftThis codec is used to encode complex audio files, such as music files. This codec supports multichannel encoding and 24-bit encoding. Two versions of this codec are the Windows Media Audio 9 Professional codec and the Windows Media Audio 9.1 Professional codec.
Windows Media Audio 9 LosslessMicrosoftThis codec is used for lossless encoding of audio files. Two versions of this codec are the Windows Media Audio 9 Lossless codec, and the Windows Media Audio 9.1 Lossless codec.
Windows Media Audio 9 VoiceMicrosoftThis codec is optimized for encoding the human voice at a high compression ratio. This codec is the preferred codec for encoding data streams that primarily consist of spoken words. For content that is a mixture of music and speech, this codec yields a very high quality audio file.
Windows Media Video 9MicrosoftThis codec is used to encode complex video files, such as movie files. The Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile Video codec is a version of this codec. The Windows Media Video 9 Advanced Profile Video codec is incorporated into advanced encoding features such as interlaced encoding.
Windows Media Video 9 ScreenMicrosoftThis codec is optimized for encoding sequential screen shots. For example, this codec is frequently used to record screen shots of monitor images of software applications. The monitor images are later used for software training.
Windows Media Video 9 ImageMicrosoftThis codec is used to convert bitmap images with the deformation information into a compressed video. Two versions of this codec are the Windows Media Video 9 Image codec, and the Windows Media Video 9 Image v2 codec.

  • Windows Media Player 10 is available as a feature of Microsoft Windows XP.
  • Codecs that are updated by Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 Runtime are included in Windows Media Player 10 and in the third-party products that use the Windows Media Runtime format.
  • Audio codecs that are updated by Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 SDK are included in Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.1.
  • Video codecs in Microsoft Windows Media Format 9.5 SDK do not update codec version numbers.
  • Codecs in the Windows Media codec table may be used in an Advanced Systems Format (ASF) container that is protected by Windows Media Digital Rights Management (WMDRM).
  • The most recent version of Microsoft Windows Media Player 9 Series SDK runtime and the re-released version of Windows Media Player 9 Series have been updated with Windows Media 9.1 codecs.
