You open a "Mini Kernel Dump" file that was generated by one of the following operating systems:
- An x64-based version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Enterprise Edition for Itanium-based Systems
- Microsoft Windows XP Professional x64 Edition
In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
Loading Dump File File_Name
Mini Kernel Dump does not contain enough information to be debugged
Could not open dump file File_Name, HRESULT 0x80004005
This problem may occur if you have configured the memory dump options to generate only a Small Memory Dump
To work around this problem, configure memory dump options to generate a Complete Memory Dump
file or a Kernel Memory Dump
file instead of a Small Memory Dump
To configure the Windows dump file, follow these steps:
- Log on to the host computer as an administrator.
- Click Start, click Run, type sysdm.cpl, and then click OK.
- Click the Advanced tab, and then click Settings under Startup and Recovery.
- Under Write Debugging Information, click one of the following options:
- Kernel Memory Dump
If you click this setting, only kernel memory is recorded. This option speeds up the process of recording information in a log file when the computer unexpectedly stops. Depending on the RAM in the computer, you must have sufficient free space available for the paging file on the boot volume. The file is stored in the folder that is listed in the Dump File box.
- Complete Memory Dump
If you click this setting, the contents of system memory are recorded when the computer unexpectedly stops. If you use this setting, you must have a paging file on the boot volume that is sufficient to hold all the physical RAM plus 1 megabyte (MB). The file is stored in the folder that is listed in the Dump File box.
- Click OK.
