SYMPTOMS

When you try to build a Web project in Microsoft Visual Basic 2005, the operation may be unsuccessful. You may also receive the following error message:
Error BC30009: Reference required to assembly 'System.Xml, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=969db8053d3322ac, Retargetable=Yes' containing the implemented interface 'System.Xml.Serialization.IXmlSerializable'. Add one to your project.
You receive the error message even though the project correctly references the System.XML assembly.

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • The Web project references a Microsoft .NET Compact Framework 2.0 assembly.
  • The .NET assembly uses a file reference.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because a bug exists in the Visual Basic 2005 compiler.
