SYMPTOMS

When you view a Web page in Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, a script error occurs.

This problem occurs if the following conditions are true:
  • The Web page includes a script that is transmitted by using HTTP compression.
  • The URL that points to the script includes a non-ASCII character.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

How to enable the hotfix

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To enable this hotfix, enable the FEATURE_URLMON_DECOMPRESSION_USES_WININET_URL2_KB924533 registry subkey. You can modify the registry settings for an individual user or for all users. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate one of the following registry subkeys:
    To modify the settings for an individual user:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl

    To modify the settings for all users:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. Right-click FeatureControl, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_URLMON_DECOMPRESSION_USES_WININET_URL2_KB924533, and then press ENTER.
  5. Right-click FEATURE_URLMON_DECOMPRESSION_USES_WININET_URL2_KB924533, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER.
  7. Right-click iexplore.exe, and then click Modify.
  8. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
  9. Exit Registry Editor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Clear the HTTP 1.1 settings

  1. In Internet Explorer 6, click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then click to clear the following check boxes:
    • Use HTTP 1.1
    • Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections

Method 2: Rename the script

  1. Rename the file name of the script so that the file name does not contain non-ASCII characters.
  2. Update the URL to point to the script that you update.

Method 3: Disable HTTP compression on the Web server

On the Web server, disable HTTP compression by changing the Web server configuration.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
