INTRODUCTION

This article describes how to copy a Microsoft Expression Web Web site to a local computer. The article also describes how to import a Web site by using the Import Web Site Wizard.

How to copy a Web site to a local computer

To copy a Web site to a local computer, follow these steps:
  1. Start Expression Web.
  2. On the File menu, click Open Site to open the Web site that you want to copy to the local hard disk.
  3. On the File menu, click Publish Site.
  4. In the Remote Web Site Properties dialog box, click File System, and then use either of the following procedures:
    • In the Remote Web site location box, type the path of the local folder where you want to copy the Web site. Use the following syntax:
      DriveLetter:\FolderName
      Note DriveLetter is the physical hard disk drive letter. FolderName is the name of the folder on the hard disk.
    • Click Browse, locate the starting page of the Web site that you want to import, click the starting page, and then click Open.

      The starting page can be any page in the Web site, not only the home page.

      Note If you previously published this Web site, the Publish Destination dialog box does not appear. Go to step 5.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Specify the pages that you want to publish. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. In the Local Web site pane, right-click each file that you do not want to publish, and then click Don't Publish.
    2. Under the Remote Web site pane, click Local to remote under Publish all changed pages.
    3. Above the Remote Web site pane, click Optimize Published HTML, and then click the Publishing tab.
    4. In the General section, select the Publish and Changes options that you want.
    5. If you want to create a log file for changes that are made during the publishing process, click to select the Log changes during publish check box.
    6. If you want to publish a subsite, click to select the Include subsites check box.
    7. Click OK.
  7. Click Publish Web site.

How to import a Web site by using the Import Web Site Wizard

To import files from an existing Web site to the computer by using the Import Web Site Wizard, follow these steps:
  1. On the File menu, point to Import, and then click File.
  2. In the Import dialog box, click From Site.
  3. In the Import Web Site Wizard dialog box, click HTTP.
  4. In the Web Site Location box, type the location of the site that you want to import. For example, type http://example.com in the Web Site Location box.

    Alternatively, click Browse, locate the starting page of the Web site that you want to import, click the starting page, and then click Open.

    The starting page can be any page in the Web site, not only the home page.
  5. Click Next, and then follow the instructions in the Import Web Site Wizard.
