SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Internet Explorer 6, a Web site cannot set a cookie if the following conditions are true:
  • The Domain attribute is in uppercase characters.
  • The Domain attribute has an odd number of characters.

    Note The initial dot is not included in the number of characters. For example, if the cookie tries to set the .EUROPE.CORP.CONTOSO.COM domain name, the cookie cannot be set. This domain name has 23 characters.

RESOLUTION

Security update information

To resolve this problem, install the most current cumulative security update for Internet Explorer. To install the most current updates, visit the following Microsoft Web site:

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. Registry information

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall the operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

You must add a new registry entry to enable this hotfix. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\FeatureControl
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click Key.
  4. Type FEATURE_COOKIE_KB932044, and then press ENTER to name the new entry.
  5. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  6. Type iexplore.exe, and then press ENTER to name the new entry.
  7. On the Edit menu, click Modify, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.
  8. Exit Registry Editor.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use lowercase characters for the Domain attribute when you set the cookie.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
