SUMMARY

This article describes the following about this hotfix release:
  • The issues that are fixed by the hotfix package
  • The prerequisites for applying the hotfix package
  • Whether you must restart the computer after you apply the hotfix package
  • Whether the hotfix package is replaced by any other hotfix package
  • Whether you must make any registry changes after you apply the hotfix package
  • The files that are contained in the hotfix package

SYMPTOMS

When you use a Volume Shadow Copy Service (VSS) writer to back up a snapshot in Microsoft SQL Server 2005 or in SQL Server 2000, an event that resembles the following may be logged in the Application log:

Event Source: SQLVDI
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1
Date: <Date>
Time: <Time>
User: N/A
Computer: <ComputerName>
Description: SQLVDI: Loc=CVDS::Cleanup. Desc=Release(ClientAliveMutex). ErrorCode=(288)Attempt to release mutex not owned by caller. . Process=7100. Thread=3132. Client. Instance=SHAREPOINT. VD=.

Note The backup operation succeeds.

This problem may affect other Virtual Device Interface (VDI)-based applications. When you use the lightweight pooling (fiber mode) SQL Server configuration option, a backup operation for a very large database (VLDB) that takes a long time may fail. Additionally, one or more of the following error messages may be logged in the SQL Server error log:
Error message 1
2007-06-18 11:21:00.83 spid820 BackupVirtualDeviceFile::ClearError: failure on backup device 'VDI_DeviceID'. Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.).
Error message 2
2007-06-18 11:21:00.83 spid820 Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.
2007-06-18 11:21:00.83 spid820 BackupMedium::ReportIoError: write failure on backup device 'VDI_DeviceID'.
Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.)
Error message 3
2007-06-18 11:21:00.87 spid820 Error: 18210, Severity: 16, State: 1.
2007-06-18 11:21:00.87 spid820 BackupVirtualDeviceFile::RequestDurableMedia: Flush failure on backup device 'VDI_DeviceID.
Operating system error 995(The I/O operation has been aborted because of either a thread exit or an application request.)

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a race condition. The race condition incorrectly logs the event in the Application log.
