Symptoms

On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2, you can configure Group Policy to use Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI) filters. When you do this by using the method that is described in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 555253, the filter check process may fail. When this problem occurs, the following event is logged:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Userenv
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1104
Description: Windows cannot perform filter check for Group Policy object cn={GUID},cn=policies,cn=system,DC=single. The associated filter cannot be found. This Group Policy Object will be skipped.

Cause

This problem occurs if the domain has a single-label DNS domain name. For more information about single-label DNS names, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

You must have Windows XP Service Pack 2 installed to apply this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix does not replace any other hotfixes.

The English version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

Workaround

To work around this problem, rename the domain DNS name. Do not use a single-label DNS name.
