Metadata that you add to a photo in Windows Live Photo Gallery is not viewable in the Properties dialog box in Windows Explorer in Windows XP.

To resolve this issue, download and install the Microsoft Photo Info tool. This tool will enable Windows Explorer to display the metadata that Windows Live Photo Gallery assigned to the photo. To obtain the tool, visit the following Microsoft Web site: (

To work around this issue, Use the Windows Live Photo Gallery Info Pane to view the tags and the captions that were assigned to a photo through Windows Live Photo Gallery.

The Windows Explorer Properties dialog box for photos contains a Summary tab that includes the following fields:
  • Title
  • Subject
  • Author
  • Keywords
  • Comments
These fields display photo information by using the Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) data from the photo. Windows Live Photo Gallery uses the Windows Imaging Component to read metadata that is assigned to a photo. However, metadata that is assigned to a photo in Windows Live Photo Gallery is not visible in the Explorer Properties dialog box. This condition is true even if you right-click a photo in Windows Live Photo Gallery, and then you select Properties. Additionally, after you assign a caption or tags to a photo in Windows Live Photo Gallery, any title or keyword that was previously assigned to the photo by using the Properties dialog box is no longer visible in the Properties dialog box.
Note To view the properties of a photo, right-click the photo, click Properties, and then click the Summary tab.
