INTRODUCTION

This update installs Key Management Service (KMS) 1.1 on computers that are running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 1 (SP1) and later versions. KMS 1.1 provides support for the following KMS client computers:
  • KMS clients that are running Windows Server 2008
  • KMS clients that are running Windows Vista

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.

Installation instructions

To install KMS 1.1, follow these steps:
  1. Use the Kmsw2k3.exe file to install KMS 1.0 for Windows Server 2003 if it is not already installed.
  2. Run the KB948003.exe update file.
  3. Restart the computer.

    Note If you do not restart the computer after you install the KB948003.exe file, you may receive the following error message when you enter the product key:
    Error: 0xc004f050 The Software Licensing service reported that the product key is invalid
  4. From the Step-by-Step guide that is included in the update package, follow these steps:
    1. Install and activate the appropriate KMS key.
    2. Make sure that the firewall is configured correctly to enable incoming communication with the KMS host computer through TCP port 1688.
    3. Make sure that the KMS host computer is published by DNS SRV records to enable automatic discovery for KMS client computers.

Prerequisites

To apply this update, you must have Key Management Service 1.0 for Windows Server 2003 SP1 or a later version of Windows Server 2003 installed.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this update.

Update replacement information

This update does not replace a previously released update.

KMS for Windows Server 2003

KMS for Windows Server 2003 is part of Microsoft Windows Volume Activation 2.0. KMS for Windows Server 2003 lets enterprise users host KMS on Windows Server 2003 to enable activation of Windows Vista by using the KMS key.

Microsoft Volume Activation 2.0 is a set of technical and policy-related solutions from Microsoft Software Protection Platform (SPP). Microsoft Volume Activation 2.0 provides Microsoft customers an easy and reliable way to protect and to manage their volume license keys.
