SYMPTOMS

On a Windows Server 2008-based computer, you implement the Simple Certificate Enrollment Protocol (SCEP) by using the Network Device Enrollment Service (NDES). However, when you try to enroll for a certificate that is larger than 4096 bits on an SCEP client, the enrollment fails. Additionally, you receive an error message that resembles the following error message:
The network device enrollment service cannot convert encoded portions of the client's http message, or the converted message is larger than 64K.

<Hex error code>. Invalid pointer
Note When you try to enroll for the 1024-bit or 2048-bit certificates, the enrollment succeeds.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the COInternetParseUrl function returns an E_POINTER error code when the supplied buffer is smaller than the required size. The function should return an E_FALSE error code. Therefore, the system cannot handle the E_FALSE error code. Additionally, you receive the error message that is mentioned in Symptoms section.
