SYMPTOMS

You have a user account that is configured to use a roaming profile. When you log on to a Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3)-based client computer by using this user account, the roaming profile does not load as expected. Instead, the system loads the local copy of the user profile or the default user profile.

This problem occurs if you are prompted to change the password when you log on to a Windows XP SP3-based client computer.

If you enable "User Environment Debug logging" as described in KB221833  (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221833/ ) , the following entries are logged in the UserEnv.log file:

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the roaming profile does not unload successfully after the password change. The profile does not unload because the "SE_RESTORE_PRIVILEGE" right is not present in the thread token.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
