SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • In Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you have a query that involves an outer join operation.
  • In the inner table, there is no clustered index.
  • You use a non-clustered index on the outer table to run the query.
  • The query selects a column that is not included in the non-clustered index of outer table.
In this scenario, you may receive the following error message:
Msg 681, Level 16, State 3, Line 1
Attempting to set a non-NULL-able column's value to NULL.
