SYMPTOMS

On a Windows Server 2003-based server, you configure the following Group Policy settings to specify the profiles path and the home directories for terminal servers:
  • Set path for TS Roaming Profiles
  • TS User Home Directory
Note These settings are located in the following directory:

Computer Configuration/Administrative Templates/Windows Components/Terminal Services

When you configure the Group Policy settings, you specify the profile path and the home directory by using some user environment variables.

For example, you set the Profile path field in the Set path for TS Roaming Profiles Group Policy setting to the following path:

\\<Server Name>\<Profile Share Name>\%UserDomain%\%Username%\%FarmName%
Or, you set the Home Dir Root Path field in the TS User Home Directory Group Policy setting to the following path:

\\<Server Name>\<Home Folder Share Name>\%UserDomain%\%Username%
In this case, the profile path and home directory root path are not redirected as specified in the corresponding Group Policy settings.

Note These Group Policy settings are available in Windows Server 2003 SP1 and later versions.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the Winlogon process is not initialized in the registry. Therefore, the Winlogon process cannot read user environment variables.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, do not use user environment variables in these two Group Policy settings.
