Summary

You can use the troubleshooter in this article to resolve Windows Update error 0x80070424. This problem occurs when the Windows Modules Installer service is stopped or is corrupted.

Resolution

Windows 8.1, Windows 8, and Windows 7

If you are running Windows 8.1 Windows 8, or Windows 7, follow these steps:
  1. Use the following Windows Update troubleshooter. To start the troubleshooter, click run now.

Windows Vista and Windows XP

If you are running Windows Vista or Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3), follow these steps:

  2. Install Windows Update again.

Additional manual steps

If the Windows Update troubleshooter can't resolve your problem, follow these steps to resolve the problem manually.

Note You must be logged on as an administrator to follow these steps.

Step 1: Restart the Windows Modules Installer service
  1. Open the Administrative Tools item in Control Panel. To do this, start Control Panel, type administrative tools in the search box, and then click Administrative Tools.
  2. Double-click Services.

    Note If you're prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, you should type the password or provide confirmation.
  3. Click the Name column heading to sort the names in reverse order.
  4. Find the Windows Modules Installer service, and then start the service.
  5. Run Windows Update again.
Step 2: Repair the Windows Modules Installer service

If you can’t find the Windows Modules Installer service, or if the Windows Modules Installer service can’t start successfully, follow these steps to repair the service:

Important To follow these steps, you have to have access to another computer that is running the same Windows product version, language version, and architecture that you are using.

  1. On the computer that does not have the problem, start Registry Editor (regedit).
  2. Locate and then right-click the following registry subkey:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\TrustedInstaller
  3. Click Export.
  4. Save the file to the desktop as TrustedInstaller.reg.
  5. Exit Registry Editor, and then copy TrustedInstaller.reg to the computer that has the problem.
  6. On the computer that has the problem, run the TrustedInstaller.reg file to update the corrupted registry key with the correct information.

    Note When you receive a message that asks whether you want to merge the file with the registry values, ​​click Yes.
  7. Restart the computer.
  8. Restart the Windows Modules Installer service as described in step 1, and then run the Windows Update again.

Step 3: Restore the TrustedInstaller.exe file in C:\Windows\Servicing

If the Windows Modules Installer service still can’t start successfully, the TrustedInstaller.exe file may be missing in the C:\Windows\Servicing folder. To restore the TrustedInstaller.exe file, follow these steps:

Note These steps assume that your operating system is installed on drive C.
  1. Open File Explorer or Windows Explorer.
  2. Type TrustedInstaller.exe in the search field, and then search drive C for the file.

    Note You have to include the nonindexed, hidden, and system files during the search.
  3. Select the most current TrustedInstaller.exe file that is located outside the C:\Windows\Servicing folder.

    Note You will find this file in different locations on your computer.
  4. Right-click the TrustedInstaller.exe file, and then click Copy.
  5. Paste the TrustedInstaller.exe file into the C:\Windows\Servicing folder.

    Note If you receive the "Access Denied" error, make sure that you have full control permission to the C:\Windows\Servicing folder. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. At an elevated command prompt, type the following command, and then press Enter:
      takeown /f <Path_And_File_Name>
      For example, type takeown /f c:\windows\servicing.
    2. Type the following command, and then press Enter to grant administrators full access to the file:
      icacls <Path_And_File_Name> /grant administratrators:F
      For example, type icacls c:\windows\servicing /grant administrators:F.
  6. Restart the computer.
  7. Restart the Windows Modules Installer service as described in step 1, and then run the Windows Update again.
