SYMPTOMS

You install security update 956572 that is documented in the security bulletin MS09-012 on a computer that is running Windows Server 2003. After you install the security update, the applications that are on the computer and that use the Java virtual machine do not start. Additionally, you receive the following error message when you try to start these applications:

Unable to create JAVA virtual machine

This issue occurs if the applications try to allocate a large amount of contiguous virtual memory. For example, this issue occurs when an application tries to allocate 800 to 900 megabytes (MB) of contiguous virtual memory.

The following language editions of Windows Server 2003 are affected by this issue:
  • Czech
  • Dutch
  • French
  • Hungarian
  • Italian
  • Polish
  • Portuguese (Brazil)
  • Portuguese (Portugal)
  • Russian
  • Spanish
  • Swedish
  • Turkish

CAUSE

This issue occurs because the base address of the Advapi.dll module is changed to another location after the security update 956572 that is documented in the security bulletin MS09-012 is installed. This behavior causes the system to be unable to allocate a large amount of contiguous virtual memory.
