In the IA-64 version of Microsoft SQL Server 2008, you have SQL Server Event Tracing for Windows (ETW) enabled. However, after you install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 (SP1) for IA-64, SQL Server may hang during startup and cannot be started.Note
This problem also occurs when you apply a SQL Server 2008 SP1-based cumulative update by using a slipstream installation.
This problem does not occur in the release version of SQL Server 2008.
This problem occurs because of a deadlock. One thread is grabbing the ETW provider registration lock, and because the ETW provider is enabled, the thread tries to load the DCOM in order to parse the XML configuration file. Meanwhile, another thread is supposed to initialize DCOM. On the other hand, this thread also loads the Shell32.dll file, which is waiting in its DLLMain
function for the ETW Provider registration lock. This causes the deadlock.

Because the builds are cumulative, each new fix release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2008 fix release. Microsoft recommends that you consider applying the most recent fix release that contains this hotfix. Microsoft SQL Server 2008 hotfixes are created for specific SQL Server service packs. You must apply a SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 hotfix to an installation of SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1. By default, any hotfix that is provided in a SQL Server service pack is included in the next SQL Server service pack.
Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
