SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft System Center Virtual Machine Manager 2008 R2, you remove a virtual hard disk (VHD) from a virtual machine. You expect that the .vhd file is detached from the virtual machine. However, the .vhd file is actually deleted on the Hyper-V server.

RESOLUTION

A hotfix is available that fixes this problem. To obtain this hotfix, visit the Microsoft Update Web site:
http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate (http://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate)
After you apply this hotfix, you will receive the following warning message when you remove a .vhd file from a virtual machine:
You have chosen to remove virtual hard disks from virtual machine VMName. This action will delete the .vhd files.
Do you want to continue?
If you click Yes, the .vhd file is deleted from the Hyper-V server. If you click No, the .vhd file remains attached to the virtual machine and is not deleted from the Hyper-V server.

If you want to remove a VHD from a virtual machine without deleting the VHD file on the Hyper-V server, use the Hyper-V Manager console.
