SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • An application or a service uses the IDirectorySearch interface to query for deleted objects in a Windows Server 2008 R2-based domain.
  • The base object for the search is bound by using the well-known GUID for the deleted objects container. This GUID is the GUID_DELETED_OBJECTS_CONTAINER GUID.
  • Paged search is used to query for deleted objects.
In this scenario, this application returns the first page. However, when this application queries the second page, you receive the following error message:
0x8007202c
Critical extension is unavailable
Additionally, the error message has the following details:
Error Code: 8256
Error Text : 00002040: SvcErr: DSID-031401E0, problem 5010 (UNAVAIL_EXTENSION), data 0
Provider : LDAP Provider

CAUSE

When you query for deleted objects on a domain controller that is running Windows Server 2008 R2, the path for the deleted objects container is cached by using the distinguished name. When the client requests the next page of query results, the information that the client passes to the server is associated with the well-known GUID path for the deleted objects container. However, this path does not match the internal distinguished name path that is stored on the server. Therefore, the directory service returns a critical extension error. This behavior causes the server to return only the first page of results to the client.
