SYMPTOMS

You configure a client computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to use roaming user profiles in a network environment. However, when you log off the client computer, the user profile is not updated.

This issue occurs when the user profile contains a file and the combined length of the file name and the profile path exceeds 260 characters (MAX_PATH). In this situation, the user’s file is saved on the local computer and the user profile is not updated.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a design change in Windows 7 and in Windows Server 2008 R2.

When you log off the client computer, the computer uses the Universal Naming Convention (UNC) path of the profile server to update the user profile. If the combined length of a file name and the profile path exceeds 260 characters, the user profile is not updated.
