Symptoms

When you use Group Policy Preferences (GPP) to deploy printers to a client computer that is running Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 R2, or Windows Server 2008 Service Pack 2 (SP2), the deployment fails. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The specified port is unknown (0x80070704 or 0x704)


Note You also receive the error message when you try to manually connect the printers to the computer.

When the issue occurs, the following event log is logged:

Log Name: Application
Source: Group Policy Printers
Event ID: 4098
Task Category: (2)
Level: Warning
Keywords: Classic
User: SYSTEM
Description: The user xxxx preference item in the xxxx Group Policy Object did not apply because it failed with error code '0x80070704 The specified port is unknown.'


Resolution

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is available from Microsoft. However, this hotfix is intended to correct only the problem that is described in this article. Apply this hotfix only to systems that are experiencing the problem described in this article. This hotfix might receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next software update that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

To apply this hotfix, you must be running Windows 7 Service Pack 1 (SP1), Windows Server 2008 R2 SP1, or Windows Server 2008 SP2.
